As it has been for the last few years, Chamonix was the venue for the opening round of the Lead Climbing World Cup. The weather was not at its best over the two days of climbing, and there were a few big names missing from the finals. Namely, Roman Julian in the men’s and Jessica Pilz in the women’s.
On a wet and cold finals night in Chamonix, the test was always going to be who could perform best in the far from ideal conditions.
In the men's it was Jakob Schubert who started his 2016 campaign with a strong 3rd place, reaching the final panel of the route, edging out Gautier Supper like he did in the semi finals semi finals.
In second place, EpicTV athlete Stefano Ghisolfi continued his impressive form this season both on and off the rock, making one move more than Jakob and Gautier.
But it was the Slovenia’s 22-year-old Domen Skofic who took the win with a fine performance in the rain. His send was smooth and technical, allowing him to move to within a couple of moves of the top; enough to secure him the second win of his career.
In the female category, it was another veteran climber who took the bronze medal as the ever consistent Jain Kim moved to within a couple of holds of the chains with an impressive climb.
But it was down to the young guns of Belgium's Anak Verhoeven and Janja Garnbret of Sloveina to fight it out for the top spot. Anak managed to reach the chains on the route with a calm and measured climb, her strength and composure marks her out as a clear contender this year.
But it was the youngster from Slovenia who managed to grab the gold, topping out, as she managed to do last year at the same venue, in hugely impressive style.
