In the webinar, international development speakers present their findings around female farmers and traders. Although cross-border trade helps many women become economically empowered, it can also make them extremely vulnerable to harassment and gender-based violence from corrupt border agents. Around 70 to 80 percent of informal cross-border traders (ICBT) in the southern Africa region are women. These women also experience high taxation and trade regulations, unsanitary working conditions, and limited access to credit facilities and information on market opportunities. Women play a unique role guaranteeing household food security and building resilience to shocks and stresses. While discussions at the intersection of gender equity/social inclusion and resilience often focus on the vulnerabilities of women, girls, and disadvantaged persons during disasters, these same individuals can also be powerful agents of resilience. Women farmers, however, tend to have less access than men to climate information, a critical resource used to inform actions that can increase resilience to the negative impacts of climate change. Additionally, even when women do receive the information, they face constraints using it due to limited decision-making authority and limited access to productive land and financial resources, such as credit. How the international development community meets this challenge will be informed by critical demographic, economic and political shifts, coupled with technological innovations that change the way we learn, communicate and work. Today, nearly half of all youth in developing nations are not engaged in work or study. How do we reach, and create pathways, for young people at the margins? The global economy must create 600 million jobs over the next 10 years – five million jobs each month – to match projected youth employment rates. How will we bridge the gap between the demand for jobs, and job creation? The world of work is changing. What does it mean for young people? How do cross-cutting issues of gender, technology, and conflict impact youth economic opportunities today, and in the next ten years? The 10th Anniversary Global Youth Economic Opportunities Summit offers an important convening space to talk about these challenges, and identify together, how we will tackle them over the next decade. The production of quality seed requires high technical expertise and specific equipment and infrastructure. In many developing countries, this is undertaken by the public sector’s breeding institutions. Unfortunately, these institutions often face obstacles in making adequate amounts of quality seed available to farmers in a timely manner. A landmark new study conducted by Monitor Deloitte and funded by USAID and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-provides a new framework that could help address seed availability issues by looking at different types of seed development and distribution systems. Pradeep Prabhala, one of the authors of this study, will join the Ag Sector Council Seminar to discuss this the policy implications of this study’s findings. Furthermore, seed policy formulation should be designed with the wider context of national agricultural policy development in mind—ensuring synergy and consistency with environmental, trade and socioeconomic policies. Charlee Doom from the USAID East Africa Regional Mission will discuss efforts to standardize regulations and streamline the process of getting improved varieties into the hands of farmers.
